In the Main Gallery Raid Projects Presents
Artist In Residence Graham Hudson (UK)
In the North Gallery: Nick Lawrence (US)
Opening: Saturday, May 5th, 7 - 10
Exhibition Runs: May 5 - May 26, 2007

Graham Hudson will present his studio research with an entirely new body of work which reflects upon this period of reassessment of his own practice during his 6 month residency at Raid Projects (May 5-26). This research has led to a consolidation of the experimental processes he has worked within in the past as well as developed during the residency. Finding sources of inspiration and materials in his surroundings, from discarded furniture to plastic and debris, Hudson takes the useless item, the appropriated and the found and turns what have been formerly classified as the neglected and unwanted into sculptural monuments and odd juxtapositions laced with humor.

Hudson's work is a tour de force of the discarded and unneeded glorified into poetic structures that reference political and historic paradigms, ranging from Schwitters to Rhoades, Arte Povera, religion to contemporary advertising, and concerns ranging from both the moral and ethical to the aesthetic and mundane. What emerges are both baroque neo-romantic dramatized gestures of excess as well as refined observations and formal inquests into form and Duchamp's legacy of the ready-made.

Graham Hudson graduated from the Royal College of Art, London in 2002. He recently had solo shows at Zinger Presents, Amsterdam and Monitor, RomeA. In June 2007 he will have a solo presentation at LISTE, Basel, with Zinger Presents. Graham Hudson is represented by Rokeby, London

In the North Gallery: Nick Lawrence

For his solo show SECOND LIFE: recent paintings, Nick Lawrence will present a new body of work exploring the issues and consequences that arise from leading a double life. Lawrence takes his cue from the internet game Second Life, where ‘players’ can create their own identities and operate within an advanced virtual network. Lawrence himself can be described as living in dual worlds, as a long-time artist and a leading gallerist. By developing his abstract, sometimes figurative canvases, he investigates how these separate realities collide and intersect. We see how two entities - the real world and the imaginary – communicate through his use of symbols and materials.
