| Artist Statement
Magazine imagery is saturated with fashion photography. I am intrigued by the glossy, alluring nature of high fashion advertising, societies embrace for desired, unattainable beauty. The superficial, glamorous qualities these images convey are used as a starting point for my recent work. A response to the original is made, through exploring the materiality of paint in a gestural, intuitive way, whereby some areas are emulated, in some cases the contour of the beautiful face or full lips juxtaposed against the freedom of the paint, creating a harsh contrast. I work in layers, build the painting and create the image. Hiding in the layers is my response and my questioning regarding societies' perception of how true beauty exists. My paintings are a journey away from the illusion of perfection. |
