Balance of Power presents 4 artists whose work addresses notions of corporate, governmental and societal control using physical balance as a humorous metaphor to explore serious concerns.
Sydney; A Guide to Recent Architecture is an ongoing collaborative video project exploring the relationship between skateboarding, civil space and architecture.
Kit Messham- Muir describes the project's tactical interventions as "multilayered, effectively infecting serious spaces with carnivalesque play, resisting received conduits of movement in the City, bastardising the City's authoritative spaces and refiguring and reclaiming its psycho-geography." In the above quote, Messham-Muir not only describes the value of skateboarding within this video but outlines the transgressive dimensions of urban street skating woldwide.
Significantly, Sydney; A Guide to Recent Architecture presents the politics of skateboarding through an alternative aesthetic program to the popular projection of skateboarding culture (MTV style fast edits and abrasive soundtrack's etc). The video employs a range of devices such as irregular framing and slow motion in order to place equal emphasis on the urban landscape and skateboarding that challenges its design and functionality.
