Rethinking Drawing

What is drawing? With a title like 'Rethinking Drawing' this seems to imply new ways of imagining what drawing can be. This is not the case here. Rather than novel approaches to the discipline this show aims to present works that function as drawings in the way they are percieved regardless of the materials used. Some are more obviously drawings as we traditionally think of them and others are more obtuse but they all function for the viewer in the same manner visually. The eye is led.

It is the act of looking and of the viewers eye traversing the work in a particular way. All of these works use Line as the basis for the investigation of conceptual and formal issues, the organization of thought and meaning. The purpose here is to expand the vocabulary of drawing and to point out what is different about drawing as opposed to other areas and to find the similarities between different creative activites which share the same essential dynamic when viewing them.

This exhibition places drawing as a primary practice in itself, not as a supporting cast member for other areas of practice, such as painting. It is an activity with its own pedigree.
